SDCC STEAM Team Shines at FIRST LEGO League in Exeter

Stoke Damerel Community College was proud to send a dedicated team of STEAM students to compete in this year’s FIRST LEGO League, held in Exeter just before the half-term break. The competition, themed ‘Submerged’, challenged students to put their robotics skills to the test in a dynamic, underwater-inspired environment.
Over the past few months, a group of 12 enthusiastic students worked tirelessly to design, build, and refine a LEGO robot capable of tackling a series of technical challenges. On competition day, their efforts were put to the test against nine other schools in a series of head-to-head matches, with the team improving their score in each round.
In addition to the robotics challenge, part of the team showcased their research skills by presenting a project on the Abyssal Zone to a panel of industry experts. The judges were highly impressed by the depth of understanding and level of detail displayed in their presentation.
The excitement continued into the knockout rounds, where students had just one chance to complete a run of 15 intricate LEGO tasks. Rising to the challenge, the team achieved their personal best score of 160 points. While it wasn’t quite enough to progress to the next stage, they left feeling proud of their achievement and more motivated than ever for next year’s competition.
Throughout the day, the team truly embodied the core values of the competition: teamwork, inclusion, and fun. Their passion, collaboration, and positive spirit were clear to see, and every student walked away feeling inspired and energised.
We’re thrilled to share that all the students are eager to return next year — with their sights firmly set on victory!
