Celebrating British Science Week: Adapt and Change

This year, SDCC celebrated British Science Week with the theme "Adapt and Change," inspiring students in Years 7-10 to explore how living things evolve and respond to their environments.
The week kicked off with engaging assemblies where students discovered some of nature’s most bizarre and brilliant adaptations. They had the chance to learn about the blood-firing horned lizard, intestine-ejecting sea cucumber, salt-sneezing marine iguana, venomous blue-ringed octopus, and the terrifying cordyceps zombie fungus. They debated their favourites, with the winning choices set to be revealed on screens around the school.
Beyond the assemblies, students took part in hands-on science challenges. The sinking pot competition during break times saw some impressive engineering skills, and congratulations go to our winners, Ollie and Jayden! Students also had the chance to explore real-world science by investigating ocean acidification and its effects on sea creatures with shells. The excitement continued with a whizz, pop, bang show, bringing science to life with thrilling experiments.
In addition to these activities, we proudly launched the National Science Week Poster Competition, encouraging students to showcase their creativity and scientific knowledge. We are also delighted that eight students took on the challenge of writing 800-word essays for the prestigious Young Science Writer of the Year Award—a fantastic achievement!
British Science Week 2025 was a huge success, filled with discovery, creativity, and excitement. Well done to all who took part!
