Students Experience the Magic of ‘War Horse’
Forty of our Year 10 and Year 12 students had the incredible opportunity to watch the National Theatre’s award-winning production of ‘War Horse’ at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.
The play tells the moving story of Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, on a British farm. When World War I begins, Joey is sold to the cavalry and journeys through war-torn Europe, facing moments of danger, joy, and heartbreak, touching the lives of everyone he encounters. Albert, determined to reunite with Joey, braves the battlefields of France to bring him home.
The production left everyone in awe, particularly with its stunning use of puppetry. The life-sized puppet of the horse, Joey, was so realistic and expressive that it felt like a real horse was on stage. The skill and artistry of the puppeteers brought Joey to life in a way that was both magical and deeply moving.
This performance was a fantastic example of the power of live theatre. The gripping storyline had every student on the edge of their seat, fully immersed in the action. By the end of the show, there was not a dry eye in the auditorium—a truly unforgettable experience that many will cherish for years to come.
Adam, one of our Year 12 students, commented on the performance stating, "I found the show to be incredibly powerful in how it portrayed the war, not just from the British perspective, but also from the German side, showing how both experienced it. The idea that both sides respected the horses and treated them with the dignity they deserved was fascinating, and at times, quite emotional. The puppetry of the horses was outstanding, and I loved how the music, spaced throughout, gave the show the feel of an old war story. I definitely enjoyed it."
Rori, another one of our Year 12 students, said, "The experience, from the seats to the atmosphere, was great value for money and truly captivated everyone. The emotion the performance evoked made everyone feel included and left people wanting more. I loved the history behind it, and while it made me laugh, I found myself crying during the sadder moments towards the end. 10/10, an amazing performance—I'd definitely go see it if it ever comes to Plymouth again!”
The students represented the school brilliantly, showing excellent behaviour and respect throughout the trip. Many of them are now eager to return to the theatre and experience more live performances.
