An Unforgettable STEM Roadshow for Year 7!
Our Year 7 cohort enjoyed an incredible afternoon at a STEM roadshow hosted by BAE Systems. Featuring hands-on experiments and dynamic activities, the event offered an exciting gateway for students to delve into the fascinating world of electricity and energy.
The excitement began with two students volunteering to experience the power of electricity first-hand. Holding onto a metal bar, they experienced a strange vibrating sensation that intensified as the voltage levels increased. One student described it as "just like a weird buzzing sensation."
Next, two more of our Year 7 students worked together to construct a life-sized circuit, putting their science lessons into practice. Their challenge was to wire the circuit correctly so that flipping a giant switch would light up a bulb. After some teamwork and problem-solving, they succeeded, earning cheers and applause from their peers.
The roadshow continued with a fast-paced game where students raced against the clock to evaluate the pros and cons of Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, and Renewable Energy. With just three minutes on the clock, they managed to get every answer right.
The grand finale featured our own Mr. Hatherley, who demonstrated how a spin cycle connected to a fan could be transformed into a working generator. As he pedalled harder, the fan spun faster, revealing an image on its blades. Encouraged by the students’ enthusiastic cheers, he pushed himself to the limit. "I can’t feel my legs now," he joked afterward, sparking laughter and applause from the crowd.
The STEM roadshow was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how classroom learning connects to real-world applications. It also introduced students to various STEM career pathways, sparking curiosity and inspiring them to envision futures in these fields.
