Year 12's Fantastic Start at Sixth Form
Year 12 students at SDCC have made an outstanding start to their time in Sixth Form, recently celebrating their efforts with a breakfast of pastries and croissants.
Demonstrating a strong sense of community, 34 students have already participated in a variety of volunteering activities during the first 8 weeks of the school year. These activities have included assisting in Catering, Drama, and Maths lessons, as well as mentoring younger students with their Sparx learning. Their commitment is a shining example for the entire school community.
Some students have even taken their volunteering beyond school, contributing time to local Scout groups and youth clubs. These experiences not only enrich personal growth but are also valuable when writing personal statements and CVs. Additionally, the sessions spent volunteering count towards the Wider Curriculum Award, earned after completing a set number of hours.
Year 12 has built on the strong foundation established by the current Year 13 students, and for them, volunteering has now become second nature.
Here’s what some of the students had to say:
Sienna: "I volunteer with the Drama department on a Thursday every other week. Personally, I’ve found a lot of comfort and joy through drama, and I want to help provide the same experience for students, whether they choose it for GCSE or not. I’ve enjoyed assisting students in the past through school productions, and this feels like a natural continuation of helping younger students explore their interests and figure out what they want to do.
For the past six years, I have also worked with Youth Parliament every Wednesday, helping to engage young people across Plymouth in decision-making processes with the Council and other organisations. In March, I was elected by young people in Plymouth to represent them in the Violence Against Women and Girls campaign, advocating for their voices and views at both local and national levels.
Additionally, I volunteer with a local youth club on weekends, working with children who have special educational and physical needs. The goal is to ensure every child has the same opportunities to participate, without judgement or criticism. I help run board games and other activities, providing an inclusive environment where these children can enjoy and engage in different experiences."
Vlada: "The greatest happiness in my life comes from trying my best, learning, and helping others. I volunteer because it helps me understand what I want to pursue as a profession, how I can grow, and the opportunity to meet new people. It’s not just about me—it’s about being helpful and gaining more knowledge."
Erin: "I volunteer both inside and outside of school for a variety of reasons. At school, I assist with English, Drama, and Support Base sessions. Outside of school, I’ve been involved with Scouts for several years, which is a real passion of mine. I love helping students in school and young people in Scouting build their confidence and expand their skills. Volunteering also helps me boost my own self-confidence."
River: "For my volunteering, I work with the youngest group in Girl Guides, the Rainbows. I’m passionate about gaining leadership experience, especially working with young people, and I see this as a great opportunity to develop those skills. Plus, I find it a rewarding way to spend my Thursday evenings."
Rori: "The reason I volunteer is to help younger students get to know the school better and understand how it works. As older students, we have a responsibility to make everyone feel comfortable and show them what they need to do to have a great experience at school. I also want the younger students to know they have a mature and positive role model in me—someone who isn’t a teacher, but who will listen as a fellow student and classmate."
These efforts showcase the outstanding dedication of our Year 12 students and contribute to building a culture of kindness and leadership that benefits the entire community. We look forward to seeing what they will accomplish throughout the rest of the year.
