Remembrance Day 2024
This Remembrance Day, our school community came together to honour and remember those who served in both World War I and World War II. Through the heartfelt efforts of staff and students, we paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed for our country, fostering deep gratitude and remembrance within our school.
Leading up to Remembrance Day, students dedicated significant time and effort to raise awareness and pay homage to the heroes of World War I and World War II. These preparations culminated in a series of impactful events that made the day truly unforgettable.
At 10:55 am, all classes paused as the school gathered for a special reading by our talented Poet Laureate, Paula. Her original poem resonated throughout the building, setting a reflective tone. At 11:00 am, a profound silence enveloped the campus as everyone observed a two-minute period of contemplation. During this time, classrooms displayed a live broadcast of the school’s Remembrance parade, deepening the atmosphere of respect and reflection.
Following this moment, Head Student Oscar, House Captains, and a representative from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) laid poppy wreaths in a moving gesture of respect for those who have served and sacrificed for our country, both past and present.
A particularly touching element of the day was the participation of students from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), RAF, Army Cadets, Sea Cadets, Scouts and Guides. Dressed in their respective uniforms, they formed a moving parade, joined by select students who had demonstrated exceptional dedication. This parade, attended by Sixth Form students and staff, stood as a powerful display of remembrance, witnessed by fellow students across the school.
The school’s art department added a striking visual element to the day’s tributes. A creative installation of poppies, crafted from bottle tops and umbrellas, formed a vibrant centrepiece in the main Street area. Additionally, students collaborated with staff to produce an eye-catching poppy dress, showcased throughout the week and admired by all. These projects embodied the collective spirit and unity of the school community.
Throughout the week, the history department enriched the commemorative atmosphere by curating a poppy wall. History students contributed their handmade paper poppies to this evolving display, which highlighted shared reflection on the sacrifices made by those who served.
This Remembrance Day was more than just an event; it was an opportunity for students to deeply connect with history. The dedication and commitment of both staff and students created a lasting tribute to the heroes of World War I and II, embedding a profound sense of gratitude and remembrance within the school. This day reminded everyone of the importance of honouring those who fought for our freedom and the enduring significance of commemorating their legacy.
