Meet Our New House Captains

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of our new House Captains, who have already begun making an impact within their respective houses.

The selection process was rigorous, with each aspiring captain delivering a carefully crafted speech that showcased their leadership qualities, vision, and commitment to their house. These speeches were presented to a large and attentive audience of 180-200 students and staff members from each house, creating an intense but inspiring atmosphere for all involved.

The students rose to the occasion, demonstrating confidence, passion, and a clear desire to lead their peers. The process of becoming a House Captain is not only about delivering a strong speech, but also about showing the ability to unite their house, inspire others, and represent the values of the school.

Our House Leaders have played a key role in helping these new captains transition into their roles smoothly. Their guidance and encouragement have been essential in ensuring the captains are prepared to lead their houses with enthusiasm and dedication. One of the first responsibilities of our new House Captains was the distribution of house ties to the students. It is wonderful to now see our SDCC students wearing these with pride.

To celebrate the beginning of this new chapter, our House Leaders and Captains kicked off a series of Fun Friday activities designed to build team spirit and friendly competition amongst the houses. These activities included a Crossbar Challenge, Penalty Shoot-out, and a Reading Challenge—all of which have already created a buzz of excitement and participation. These events are just the start of a year-long journey where students will work together to earn house points, build camaraderie, and enjoy the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a house.

In addition to the fun and games, a really meaningful part of our house system is the emphasis on giving back. Recently, we held a House Charity Vote whereby students had the opportunity to choose a charity for their house to support throughout the year. This initiative allows students to connect with causes they feel passionate about and encourages a spirit of generosity and social responsibility. Students could choose from a wide range of charities, primarily local organisations focused on issues affecting children, families, and the community. All students have now had the chance to cast their votes and the results will be announced shortly.

Here’s what our House Leaders have to say:

Mr Harvey, Smeaton’s House Leader commented, “I am super pleased with the new house Captain and deputy’s. We have an array of strengths within our leadership team. Our house captain, Romany is career driven and will set an excellent example. Sophie and Bibi are both really organised, enthusiastic and dedicated to being the best they can be for themselves and the house. Arshad is a lovely, polite and popular student who encompasses kindness and respect. Finally, Freddie is a student who is full of confidence, has a great personality and inspires students within the house to take part in all sorts of activities.“

Mr Bullard, Saltram’s House Leader said, “We received the most House Captains / Deputy House Captain applications out of all of the Houses - this shows the true winning mentality and community spirit that we have as a house. It was a tough selection process with 5 Y12 students battling it out for the coveted title of 'Saltram House Captain' - many congratulations to Adrianna who received the most votes and will be leading a team of Deputies - Archie in Y9, Sophia in Y8, Eonan and Evie in Y7. We have a very strong team this year with a wide variety of ages and experiences - I am very excited about the amazing opportunities and activities that are being organised this year with all the pressure on Saltram to continue their winning streak.”

“Adrianna, Archie, Sophia, Eonan, Evie - Pressure, what pressure? Pressure is for tyres!”

Mr Hatherley, Sutton’s House Leader remarked, "With the new season underway, I can't wait to see what creative and wonderful activities that students get themselves involved in. From our Fun Fridays to in-house competitions, this year is going to be bigger and better. This will be the year that Sutton takes over!

Noah, one of our Deputy House Captains, commented: "I am so glad I was able to become a House Captain. This is a great way for me to take on more responsibility around the school."

Miss Booth, Mayflower’s House Leader stated, " We have a really strong team representing Mayflower this year. Everyone's speeches were thought-provoking and showed a real dedication to the college and their house, their ideas and visions for Mayflower are amazing, and I am really proud to be working with such a resilient group of young people"

We look forward to watching our new house captains grow in their roles and see the positive impact they make on their houses, their school, and beyond.
