Celebrating International Pronouns Day

Yesterday, staff and students at Stoke Damerel Community College celebrated International Pronouns Day by highlighting the importance of pronouns in creating an inclusive and respectful environment. The event encouraged open discussions and aimed to raise awareness about how pronouns play a key role in recognising and respecting individual identities.

Staff were invited to wear stickers with their chosen pronouns, which led to engaging discussions throughout the school. Year 10 student Isabelle shared, "Pronouns help us understand how people express their identity. I learnt a lot about the variety of pronouns and why people choose to use them."

Additionally, a PowerPoint presentation was shown in communal areas, explaining what pronouns are and why they are important. Pronouns such as "she," "he," and "they" are used to refer to someone without using their name. For example:

  • "She went to the park to meet her friends."

  • "What did they say on the phone?"

  • "He was looking for his shoes, which were right in front of him."

The presentation underscored the importance of respecting each person's chosen pronouns. Since pronouns can vary depending on someone's gender identity and personal comfort, using the correct pronouns demonstrates respect for who they are.
