Plymouth College CCF Shines at Army Cadets Regional First Aid Competition
This year, SDCC proudly hosted the Army Cadets Regional First Aid Competition, where cadets from Plymouth College CCF made their debut, demonstrating their remarkable first aid skills. The event was a significant milestone for the college, as it marked their first time competing in this esteemed competition.
In preparation for the competition, cadets volunteered to undergo extensive first aid training. Out of those who stepped forward, only four outstanding individuals were selected to represent the Plymouth College contingent. This selection process underscored the commitment and dedication of the cadets, who demonstrated a strong desire to excel in this critical skill set. The other cadets showed their support to the team by volunteering to begin site hosting the other competitors, Cpl. Stepien said "I really enjoyed supporting our team and meeting the cadets from the other detachments."
The competition featured both individual and team challenges, where participants were tested on their ability to handle various medical emergencies. The team scenario involved a realistic mass casualty incident at a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) campsite. The cadets had to respond to severe injuries like burns and anaphylactic reactions, requiring quick thinking and strong teamwork.
Individual scenarios added further pressure, as cadets tackled a series of simulated emergencies, including managing deep cuts, sprained ankles, asthma attacks, and anaphylactic shock. Each competitor was judged on their ability to assess the situation, provide the right care, and communicate effectively in high-pressure situations.
Despite being first-time participants, Plymouth College CCF exceeded expectations. Their thorough preparation paid off, earning them the title of HQ South West CCF First Aid Team. In recognition of their outstanding performance, the team received gold medals and brigade First Aid colours, presented by Colonel Guest.
This victory also secured their place in the national competition later this year. Team captain Staff Sergeant Elliott expressed pride in the team’s achievement: “We’ve put hours in, and to see our hard work recognised is great,” he said. “Competing against other teams and winning in our first year is a real gift.”
The national competition will take place at the Safety Centre in Greater Manchester, a state-of-the-art facility operated by the Fire Rescue Service. Should the Plymouth College CCF team perform well, they will move on to the interservice competition, representing the Army Cadets against teams from other branches of the military. Lance Corporal Culver shared the team's excitement: “We’re excited about the upcoming challenges. It’s a chance to not only represent our college but also our community. We’re determined to make everyone proud.”
Sgt. O'Brien, lead teacher for the Plymouth College CCF, emphasised the importance of first aid training within the cadet program: "The success of the Plymouth College CCF team at the Regional First Aid Competition highlights the importance of first aid training within the cadet program. It serves as a reminder that these skills are not only vital for competitions but are essential for saving lives in real-world situations."
The dedication and commitment of these young cadets are a testament to their bright futures, as they continue to strive for excellence in the challenges ahead.
