Students Honoured at prestigious Plymouth Youth Awards

One of the most anticipated events of the year, the Plymouth Youth Awards, took place last night, June 19th, celebrating the outstanding achievements of children and young adults.

These awards highlight their inspiring feats against adversity and their dedication to making a difference. This year, we are incredibly proud of Sienna, Scarlet, and Marie who were all nominated for Plymouth’s annual Youth Awards held at the Crowne Plaza. Not only were they honoured with nominations, but all three were finalists. Sienna even won the Inspirational Person of the Year award!

Sienna:

Sienna stood out at this year's Plymouth Youth Awards, where she was honoured with the Inspirational Person of the Year award. Presented by the Devon and Cornwall Police Commissioner, the award recognised Sienna's impactful campaigns against violence targeting girls in schools and online.

Sienna, also a finalist in the Arts and Culture category, has used her love for performing arts to raise awareness about important issues that young women face in today's society and schools. For 5 years she has given her spare time to star in multiple online videos about violence against girls. Sienna's achievements highlight the power of youth activism and creativity in making a positive difference.

Marie:

Marie was a finalist for the Young Carer award in recognition of her unwavering support for her mother and younger brother during challenging times. Born with multiple health issues, her brother's condition required Marie to mature quickly and shoulder significant responsibilities at home.

Beyond her caregiving role, Marie has actively contributed to her community, representing her college on numerous occasions. She has also excelled in school performances, demonstrating impeccable behaviour, attitude, and dedication. Both staff and students view her as a role model, inspired by her exceptional effort and resilience.

Mr. Nevin, her Head of Year, nominated Marie for the award highlighting her pivotal role in supporting her family. He said: “Marie is an inspirational young person, her younger brother was born with Dravet Syndrome, a terrible condition with multiple implications. This is also known as Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy. From day one Marie has been a massive support system for her mother and young brother. Her brother despite this condition has had a fun filled life and has a shining personality due to the support from Marie and the family.

Marie has missed out on opportunities but took that in her stride to be there for her family, all whilst being a hard working dedicated student at her Secondary School.

Sadly in 2023, her brother passed away at the age of 5. Marie has continued to be a rock for her mother and family, she presented a beautiful speech at his funeral and has made her brother and family so proud with her love and care.

The family is simply incredible and a testament to that is how Marie Cavey presents herself everyday. Days are beyond difficult but she still holds her head high with a smile on her face. Her Baby brother must be so proud because I know her wonderful family and school are.”

Marie commented on the experience, saying “Even though I didn't win, it was an honour to be nominated and become a finalist. I was 3 out of 2000 nominations for the award, and I am incredibly proud of that. No matter how big or small, you can always make a change.”

Scarlet:

Scarlet was recognised as a finalist for the Unsung Hero of the Year award due to her dedicated volunteer work with a local food bank and her compassionate caregiving role. She spent her free time selflessly caring for an elderly neighbour during her breast cancer treatment and recovery, serving as her live-in carer for a weekend when she came out of surgery. She has also helped her mother with various health issues and been a constant support to her.
