young carers

Four students from the College's Young Carers Group have been to Swindon to receive specialist training to become Young Carers Champions.

The four students - Samantha, Sommer, Jaime-Leigh and Melissa - attended a conference in Swindon at the end of January organised by the Young Carers In Focus programme.

"It gave students the opportunity to meet other young carers from across the country," explained Health & Social Care teacher Ms Blackmore, who accompanied the group

"Students attended a series of workshops over the 24 hours where they were able to gain an understanding in mental health awareness and leadership skills.

"The workshops provided the students with the knowledge and understanding of these topics which they will bring back to school and use to support the Young Carers Group and also spread the work within the city about young carers and their rights."

The College has set up its own Young Carers Group which now has 15 members who have a variety of activities arranged for them such as pamper evenings, DVD and popcorn evenings, games nights and ice skating trips.

The group also has its own dedicated room in the College which students can use at break and lunch times and at the end of the school day.

Ms Blackmore said the four students who attended the conference were "a real credit" to the College.

"The workshop leaders were amazed at the high level of confidence the girls demonstrated over the weekend and recommended them for further training to allow them to progress," she said.

"At the end of the conference the four girls along with other young carers presented back to everyone who attended the conference, sharing what they had gained from the weekend and sharing their ideas of how they will spread the work about young carers when they return to school."

 Praise For Young Carers Group
