HAP students used their wits and skills in problem-solving and code cracking when they faced the challenge of the Escape Rooms, Plymouth.

The Year 9 and 10 Maths HAP Club are officially Escape artists after taking on the puzzle challenge at Stonehouse.

Escape Rooms is a real-life room escape game which requires players to work together to solve hidden puzzles to escape a locked-in themed room, before the one-hour timer runs out.

It gives players the opportunity to use their intuition, teamwork skills and intelligence to accomplish a unique and challenging task.

"They were set the challenge of solving puzzles, clues and riddles to find keys and codes to help them escape from a locked room," explained Mrs Cousins, Raising Standards Leader Year 9 and 10 Maths.

 "This was all in the name of learning (and fun!) as a Maths and problem-solving enrichment activity for our High Achieving Pupils."

The first group had to navigate around a Cold War-themed room, complete with smoke and gas masks, whilst the second group had to escape from a psychedelic, topsy-turvy room which included fancy dress!

"Both teams performed fantastically, working together as a team to solve problems, think laterally and decode, and both teams managed to escape just inside the one-hour time limit."

HAP Club students also got the chance to work with a STEM construction kit from MTa Learning.

"Six of our HAP club students were set the challenge of constructing any working piece of machinery they could imagine from a specially-created STEM construction kit, kindly on loan to us from MTa," said Mrs Cousins.

"The two groups thought through the task methodically, worked efficiently as a team and got over any hurdles that arose, and in an hour and half managed to construct a working bicycle and a working crossbow.


"Well done to the boys for demonstrating both their engineering and problem-solving skills," she said.
