A Sixth form student has presented her work for the Nuffield foundation at a celebration event at Exeter University's Cornwall campus.

Iustina, who is in Year 13, attended the Nuffield Research celebration event held after completing her Nuffield Research Placement.

The placements provide students each year with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Students in the first year of a post-16 Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) course are eligible to apply.

"Iustina successfully secured her research placement last summer against fierce competition - over 4,000 students applied for 1,000 placements throughout the UK and just 38 students secured placements in the South West," explained Mrs Parker, the College's UCAS and Careers co-ordinator.

Iustina worked at the Department of Hepatology at Derriford Hospital for six weeks during the summer, working with Dr Felmlee to determine molecular mechanisms of resistance to HCV (Hepatitis C) infection.

"Iustina spent much of her time using equipment unavailable in schools and following strict protocols in order to isolate a single strand of DNA.

"She then had to write up her work as a report for the Nuffield foundation and has also used her work as the basis of an academic assignment for the Realising Opportunities programme.

"Iustina also found time to do a week-long Summer School at Newcastle University!" said Mrs Parker.

"This year four students from Year 12 have just heard that their Nuffield applications have been successful and that research placements are in the process of being arranged.

"Congratulations to them all and we look forward to seeing the fruits of their endeavours in the Autumn term."
